بَرَآءَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
Barāʾatum minallāhi warasūlihī ilal-ladhīna ʿāhattum minal-mushrikīn
A declaration of immunity from God and His Messenger to the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty.
فَسِيحُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْزِى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Fasīḥū fil-arḍi arbaʿata ashhuriw waʿlamū annakum ghayru muʿjizillāhi waʾannallāha mukhzil-kāfirīn
So travel the land for four months, and know that you cannot escape God, and that God will disgrace the disbelievers.
وَأَذَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ۙ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
Waʾadhānum minallāhi warasūlihī ilan-nāsi yawmal-ḥajjil-akbari annallāha barīʾum minal-mushrikīna warasūluh, faʾin tubtum fahuwa khayrul lakum, waʾin tawallaytum faʿlamū annakum ghayru muʿjizillāh, wabashshiril-ladhīna kafarū biʿadhābin alīm
And a proclamation from God and His Messenger to the people on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage, that God has disowned the polytheists, and so did His Messenger. If you repent, it will be better for you. But if you turn away, know that you cannot escape God. And announce to those who disbelieve a painful punishment.
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَلَمْ يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًا فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Illal-ladhīna ʿāhattum minal-mushrikīna thumma lam yanquṣūkum shayʾaw walam yuẓāhirū ʿalaykum aḥadan faʾatimmū ilayhim ʿahdahum ilā muddatihim, innallāha yuḥibbul-muttaqīn
Except for those among the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty, and did not violate any of its terms, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them to the end of its term. God loves the righteous.
فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلْأَشْهُرُ ٱلْحُرُمُ فَٱقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ وَٱقْعُدُوا۟ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ ۚ فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّوا۟ سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Faʾidhansalakhal-ashhurul-ḥurumu faqtulul-mushrikīna ḥaythu wajattumūhum wakhudhūhum waḥṣurūhum waqʿudū lahum kulla marṣad, faʾin tābū waʾaqāmuṣ-ṣalāta waʾātawuz-zakāta fakhallū sabīlahum, innallāha ghafūrur raḥīm
When the Sacred Months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them. And capture them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, and perform the prayers, and pay the alms, then let them go their way. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
وَإِنْ أَحَدٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ٱسْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسْمَعَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَأْمَنَهُۥ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ
Waʾin aḥadum minal-mushrikīnastajāraka faʾajirhu ḥattā yasmaʿa kalāmallāhi thumma ablighhu maʾmanah, dhālika biʾannahum qawmul lā yaʿlamūn
And if any one of the polytheists asks you for protection, give him protection so that he may hear the Word of God; then escort him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.
كَيْفَ يَكُونُ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ عَهْدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّمْ عِندَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ ۖ فَمَا ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Kayfa yakūnu lil-mushrikīna ʿahdun ʿindallāhi waʿinda rasūlihī illal-ladhīna ʿāhattum ʿindal-masjidil-ḥarām, famastaqāmū lakum fastaqīmū lahum, innallāha yuḥibbul-muttaqīn
How can there be a treaty with the polytheists on the part of God and His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque? As long as they are upright with you, be upright with them. God loves the pious.
كَيْفَ وَإِن يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا يَرْقُبُوا۟ فِيكُمْ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ يُرْضُونَكُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتَأْبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ
Kayfa waʾiy yaẓharū ʿalaykum lā yarqubū fīkum illaw walā dhimmah, yurḍūnakum biʾafwāhihim wataʾbā qulūbuhum, waʾaktharuhum fāsiqūn
How? Whenever they overcome you, they respect neither kinship nor treaty with you. They satisfy you with lip service, but their hearts refuse, and most of them are immoral.
ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
Ishtaraw biʾāyātillāhi thamanan qalīlan faṣaddū ʿan sabīlih, innahum sāʾa mā kānū yaʿmalūn
They traded away God’s revelations for a cheap price, so they barred others from His path. How evil is what they did.
لَا يَرْقُبُونَ فِى مُؤْمِنٍ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَ
Lā yarqubūna fī muʾminin illaw walā dhimmah, waʾulāʾika humul-muʿtadūn
Towards a believer they respect neither kinship nor treaty. These are the transgressors.
فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ ۗ وَنُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ
Faʾin tābū waʾaqāmuṣ-ṣalāta waʾātawuz-zakāta faʾikhwānukum fid-dīn, wanufaṣṣilul-āyāti liqawmiy yaʿlamūn
But if they repent, and perform the prayers, and give the obligatory charity, then they are your brethren in faith. We detail the revelations for a people who know.
وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَطَعَنُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙ إِنَّهُمْ لَآ أَيْمَـٰنَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنتَهُونَ
Waʾin nakathū aymānahum mim baʿdi ʿahdihim waṭaʿanū fī dīnikum faqātilū aʾimmatal-kufri innahum lā aymāna lahum laʿallahum yantahūn
But if they violate their oaths after their pledge, and attack your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief—they have no faith—so that they may desist.
أَلَا تُقَـٰتِلُونَ قَوْمًا نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِإِخْرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۚ أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَوْهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Alā tuqātilūna qawman nakathū aymānahum wahammū biʾikhrājir-rasūli wahum badaʾūkum awwala marrah, atakhshawnahum, fallāhu aḥaqqu an takhshawhu in kuntum muʾminīn
Will you not fight a people who violated their oaths, and planned to exile the Messenger, and initiated hostilities against you? Do you fear them? It is God you should fear, if you are believers.
قَـٰتِلُوهُمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ وَيُخْزِهِمْ وَيَنصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Qātilūhum yuʿadhdhibhumullāhu biʾaydīkum wayukhzihim wayanṣurkum ʿalayhim wayashfi ṣudūra qawmim muʾminīn
Fight them. God will punish them at your hands, and humiliate them, and help you against them, and heal the hearts of a believing people.
وَيُذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَيَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
Wayudhhib ghayẓa qulūbihim, wayatūbullāhu ʿalā may yashāʾ, wallāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīm
And He will remove the anger of their hearts. God redeems whomever He wills. God is Knowledgeable and Wise.
أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تُتْرَكُوا۟ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا رَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلِيجَةً ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
Am ḥasibtum an tutrakū walammā yaʿlamillāhul-ladhīna jāhadū minkum walam yattakhidhū min dūnillāhi walā rasūlihī walal-muʾminīna walījah, wallāhu khabīrum bimā taʿmalūn
Or do you think that you will be left alone, without God identifying which of you will strive, and take no supporters apart from God, His Messenger, and the believers? God is well aware of what you do.
مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَن يَعْمُرُوا۟ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَـٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِم بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ
Mā kāna lil-mushrikīna ay yaʿmurū masājidallāhi shāhidīna ʿalā anfusihim bil-kufr, ulāʾika ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum, wafin-nāri hum khālidūn
It is not for the polytheists to attend God’s places of worship while professing their disbelief. These—their works are in vain, and in the Fire they will abide.
إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۖ فَعَسَىٰٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَن يَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
Innamā yaʿmuru masājidallāhi man āmana billāhi wal-yawmil-ākhiri waʾaqāmaṣ-ṣalāta waʾātaz-zakāta walam yakhsha illallāh, faʿasā ulāʾika ay yakūnū minal-muhtadīn
The only people to attend God’s places of worship are those who believe in God and the Last Day, and pray regularly, and practice regular charity, and fear none but God. These are most likely to be guided.
۞ أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ ٱلْحَآجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَجَـٰهَدَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ لَا يَسْتَوُۥنَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
Ajaʿaltum siqāyatal-ḥājji waʿimāratal-masjidil-ḥarāmi kaman āmana billāhi wal-yawmil-ākhiri wajāhada fī sabīlillāh, lā yastawūna ʿindallāh, wallāhu lā yahdil-qawmaẓ-ẓālimīn
Do you consider giving water to pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque the same as believing in God and the Last Day and striving in God’s path? They are not equal in God’s sight. God does not guide the unjust people.
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ
Alladhīna āmanū wahājarū wajāhadū fī sabīlillāhi biʾamwālihim waʾanfusihim aʿẓamu darajatan ʿindallāh, waʾulāʾika humul-fāʾizūn
Those who believe, and emigrate, and strive in God’s path with their possessions and their persons, are of a higher rank with God. These are the winners.
يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ وَجَنَّـٰتٍ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُّقِيمٌ
Yubashshiruhum rabbuhum biraḥmatim minhu wariḍwāniw wajannātil lahum fīhā naʿīmum muqīm
Their Lord announces to them good news of mercy from Him, and acceptance, and gardens wherein they will have lasting bliss.
خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ
Khālidīna fīhā abadā, innallāha ʿindahū ajrun ʿaẓīm
Abiding therein forever. With God is a great reward.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ إِنِ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْكُفْرَ عَلَى ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ
Yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū ābāʾakum waʾikhwānakum awliyāʾa inistaḥabbul-kufra ʿalal-īmān, wamay yatawallahum minkum faʾulāʾika humuẓ-ẓālimūn
O you who believe! Do not ally yourselves with your parents and your siblings if they prefer disbelief to belief. Whoever of you allies himself with them—these are the wrongdoers.
قُلْ إِن كَانَ ءَابَآؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلٌ ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَـٰرَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَآ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَجِهَادٍ فِى سَبِيلِهِۦ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِىَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ
Qul in kāna ābāʾukum waʾabnāʾukum waʾikhwānukum waʾazwājukum waʿashīratukum waʾamwāluniqtaraftumūhā watijāratun takhshawna kasādahā wamasākinu tarḍawnahā aḥabba ilaykum minallāhi warasūlihī wajihādin fī sabīlihī fatarabbaṣū ḥattā yaʾtiyallāhu biʾamrih, wallāhu lā yahdil-qawmal-fāsiqīn
Say, “If your parents, and your children, and your siblings, and your spouses, and your relatives, and the wealth you have acquired, and a business you worry about, and homes you love, are more dear to you than God, and His Messenger, and the struggle in His cause, then wait until God executes His judgment.” God does not guide the sinful people.
لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ۙ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ
Laqad naṣarakumullāhu fī mawāṭina kathīratiw wayawma ḥunaynin idh aʿjabatkum kathratukum falam tughni ʿankum shayʾaw waḍāqat ʿalaykumul-arḍu bimā raḥubat thumma wallaytum mudbirīn
God has given you victory in numerous regions; but on the day of Hunayn, your great number impressed you, but it availed you nothing; and the land, as spacious as it was, narrowed for you; and you turned your backs in retreat.
ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Thumma anzalallāhu sakīnatahū ʿalā rasūlihī waʿalal-muʾminīna waʾanzala junūdal lam tarawhā waʿadhdhabal-ladhīna kafarū, wadhālika jazāʾul-kāfirīn
Then God sent down His serenity upon His Messenger, and upon the believers; and He sent down troops you did not see; and He punished those who disbelieved. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Thumma yatūbullāhu mim baʿdi dhālika ʿalā may yashāʾ, wallāhu ghafūrur raḥīm
Then, after that, God will relent towards whomever He wills. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٌ فَلَا يَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلْمَسْجِدَ ٱلْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَـٰذَا ۚ وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ عَيْلَةً فَسَوْفَ يُغْنِيكُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِن شَآءَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
Yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū innamal-mushrikūna najasun falā yaqrabul-masjidal-ḥarāma baʿda ʿāmihim hādhā, waʾin khiftum ʿaylatan fasawfa yughnīkumullāhu min faḍlihī in shāʾ, innallāha ʿalīmun ḥakīm
O you who believe! The polytheists are polluted, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs. And if you fear poverty, God will enrich you from His grace, if He wills. God is Aware and Wise.
قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ ٱلْحَقِّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا۟ ٱلْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَـٰغِرُونَ
Qātilul-ladhīna lā yuʾminūna billāhi walā bil-yawmil-ākhiri walā yuḥarrimūna mā ḥarramallāhu warasūluhū walā yadīnūna dīnal-ḥaqqi minal-ladhīna ūtul-kitāba ḥattā yuʿṭul-jizyata ʿay yadiw wahum ṣāghirūn
Fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden, nor abide by the religion of truth—from among those who received the Scripture—until they pay the due tax, willingly or unwillingly.
وَقَالَتِ ٱلْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى ٱلْمَسِيحُ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۖ يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ قَوْلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۚ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ
Waqālatil-yahūdu ʿuzayrunibnullāhi waqālatin-naṣāral-masīḥubnullāh, dhālika qawluhum biʾafwāhihim, yuḍāhiʾūna qawlal-ladhīna kafarū min qabl, qātalahumullāh, annā yuʾfakūn
The Jews said, “Ezra is the son of God,” and the Christians said, “The Messiah is the son of God.” These are their statements, out of their mouths. They emulate the statements of those who blasphemed before. May God assail them! How deceived they are!
ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَـٰنَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْمَسِيحَ ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَـٰهًا وَٰحِدًا ۖ لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
Ittakhadhū aḥbārahum waruhbānahum arbābam min dūnillāhi wal-masīḥabna maryam, wamā umirū illā liyaʿbudū ilāhaw wāḥidā, lā ilāha illā huw, subḥānahū ʿammā yushrikūn
They have taken their rabbis and their priests as lords instead of God, as well as the Messiah son of Mary. Although they were commanded to worship none but the One God. There is no god except He. Glory be to Him; high above what they associate with Him.
يُرِيدُونَ أَن يُطْفِـُٔوا۟ نُورَ ٱللَّهِ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَيَأْبَى ٱللَّهُ إِلَّآ أَن يُتِمَّ نُورَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ
Yurīdūna ay yuṭfiʾū nūrallāhi biʾafwāhihim wayaʾballāhu illā ay yutimma nūrahū walaw karihal-kāfirūn
They want to extinguish God’s light with their mouths, but God refuses except to complete His light, even though the disbelievers dislike it.
هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ ٱلْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّينِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ
Huwal-ladhī arsala rasūlahū bil-hudā wadīnil-ḥaqqi liyuẓhirahū ʿalad-dīni kullihī walaw karihal-mushrikūn
It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, in order to make it prevail over all religions, even though the idolaters dislike it.
۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْبَارِ وَٱلرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَٰلَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ ٱلذَّهَبَ وَٱلْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
Yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū inna kathīram minal-aḥbāri war-ruhbāni layaʾkulūna amwālan-nāsi bil-bāṭili wayaṣuddūna ʿan sabīlillāh, wal-ladhīna yaknizūnadh-dhahaba wal-fiḍḍata walā yunfiqūnahā fī sabīlillāhi fabashshirhum biʿadhābin alīm
O you who believe! Many of the rabbis and priests consume people’s wealth illicitly, and hinder from God’s path. Those who hoard gold and silver, and do not spend them in God’s cause, inform them of a painful punishment.
يَوْمَ يُحْمَىٰ عَلَيْهَا فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَجُنُوبُهُمْ وَظُهُورُهُمْ ۖ هَـٰذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِأَنفُسِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْنِزُونَ
Yawma yuḥmā ʿalayhā fī nāri jahannama fatukwā bihā jibāhuhum wajunūbuhum waẓuhūruhum, hādhā mā kanaztum liʾanfusikum fadhūqū mā kuntum taknizūn
On the Day when they will be heated in the Fire of Hell, then their foreheads, and their sides, and their backs will be branded with them: “This is what you hoarded for yourselves; so taste what you used to hoard.”
إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِى كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا۟ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ كَآفَّةً كَمَا يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ كَآفَّةً ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Inna ʿiddatash-shuhūri ʿindallāhithnā ʿashara shahran fī kitābillāhi yawma khalaqas-samāwāti wal-arḍa minhā arbaʿatun ḥurum, dhālikad-dīnul-qayyimu falā taẓlimū fīhinna anfusakum waqātilul-mushrikīna kāffatan kamā yuqātilūnakum kāffah, waʿlamū annallāha maʿal-muttaqīn
The number of months, according to God, is twelve months—in the decree of God—since the Day He created the heavens and the earth, of which four are sacred. This is the correct religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight the polytheists collectively, as they fight you collectively, and know that God is with the righteous.
إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ زِيَادَةٌ فِى ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖ يُضَلُّ بِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَامًا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَامًا لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا۟ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Innaman-nasīʾu ziyādatun fil-kufri yuḍallu bihil-ladhīna kafarū yuḥillūnahū ʿāmaw wayuḥarrimūnahū ʿāmal liyuwāṭiʾū ʿiddata mā ḥarramallāhu fayuḥillū mā ḥarramallāh, zuyyina lahum sūʾu aʿmālihim, wallāhu lā yahdil-qawmal-kāfirīn
Postponement is an increase in disbelief—by which those who disbelieve are led astray. They allow it one year, and forbid it another year, in order to conform to the number made sacred by God, thus permitting what God has forbidden. The evil of their deeds seems good to them. God does not guide the disbelieving people.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمُ ٱنفِرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ٱثَّاقَلْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ أَرَضِيتُم بِٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا مِنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ فَمَا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ
Yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū mā lakum idhā qīla lakumunfirū fī sabīlillāhiththāqaltum ilal-arḍ, araḍītum bil-ḥayātid-dunyā minal-ākhirah, famā matāʿul-ḥayātid-dunyā fil-ākhirati illā qalīl
O you who believe! What is the matter with you, when it is said to you, “Mobilize in the cause of God,” you cling heavily to the earth? Do you prefer the present life to the Hereafter? The enjoyment of the present life, compared to the Hereafter, is only a little.
إِلَّا تَنفِرُوا۟ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَيْـًٔا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
Illā tanfirū yuʿadhdhibkum ʿadhāban alīmaw wayastabdil qawman ghayrakum walā taḍurrūhu shayʾā, wallāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr
Unless you mobilize, He will punish you most painfully, and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all. God has power over all things.
إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِىَ ٱثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِى ٱلْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَا ۖ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودٍ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗ وَكَلِمَةُ ٱللَّهِ هِىَ ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
Illā tanṣurūhu faqad naṣarahullāhu idh akhrajahul-ladhīna kafarū thāniyathnayni idh humā fil-ghāri idh yaqūlu liṣāḥibihī lā taḥzan innallāha maʿanā, faʾanzalallāhu sakīnatahū ʿalayhi waʾayyadahū bijunūdil lam tarawhā wajaʿala kalimatal-ladhīna kafarus-suflā, wakalimatullāhi hiyal-ʿulyā, wallāhu ʿazīzun ḥakīm
If you do not help him, God has already helped him, when those who disbelieved expelled him, and he was the second of two in the cave. He said to his friend, “Do not worry, God is with us.” And God made His tranquility descend upon him, and supported him with forces you did not see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the Word of God is the Highest. God is Mighty and Wise.
ٱنفِرُوا۟ خِفَافًا وَثِقَالًا وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
Infirū khifāfaw wathiqālaw wajāhidū biʾamwālikum waʾanfusikum fī sabīlillāh, dhālikum khayrul lakum in kuntum taʿlamūn
Mobilize, light or heavy, and strive with your possessions and your lives in the cause of God. That is better for you, if you only knew.
لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَـٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ
Law kāna ʿaraḍan qarībaw wasafaran qāṣidal lattabaʿūka walākim baʿudat ʿalayhimush-shuqqah, wasayaḥlifūna billāhi lawistaṭaʿnā lakharajnā maʿakum, yuhlikūna anfusahum, wallāhu yaʿlamu innahum lakādhibūn
Had the gain been immediate, and the journey shorter, they would have followed you; but the distance seemed too long for them. Still they swear by God: “Had we been able, we would have marched out with you.” They damn their own souls, and God knows that they are lying.
عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنكَ لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكَ ٱلَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَتَعْلَمَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
ʿAfallāhu ʿank, lima adhinta lahum ḥattā yatabayyana lakal-ladhīna ṣadaqū wataʿlamal-kādhibīn
May God pardon you! Why did you give them permission before it became clear to you who are the truthful ones, and who are the liars?
لَا يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ أَن يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Lā yastaʾdhinukal-ladhīna yuʾminūna billāhi wal-yawmil-ākhiri ay yujāhidū biʾamwālihim waʾanfusihim, wallāhu ʿalīmum bil-muttaqīn
Those who believe in God and the Last Day do not ask you for exemption from striving with their possessions and their lives. God is fully aware of the righteous.
إِنَّمَا يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَٱرْتَابَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِى رَيْبِهِمْ يَتَرَدَّدُونَ
Innamā yastaʾdhinukal-ladhīna lā yuʾminūna billāhi wal-yawmil-ākhiri wartābat qulūbuhum fahum fī raybihim yataraddadūn
Only those who do not believe in God and the Last Day ask you for exemption. Their hearts are full of doubts, so they waver in their doubts.
۞ وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا۟ ٱلْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا۟ لَهُۥ عُدَّةً وَلَـٰكِن كَرِهَ ٱللَّهُ ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ ٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ
Walaw arādul-khurūja laʾaʿaddū lahū ʿuddataw walākin karihallāhumbiʿāthahum fathabbaṭahum waqīlaqʿudū maʿal-qāʿidīn
Had they wanted to mobilize, they would have made preparations for it; but God disliked their participation, so He held them back, and it was said, “Stay behind with those who stay behind.”
لَوْ خَرَجُوا۟ فِيكُم مَّا زَادُوكُمْ إِلَّا خَبَالًا وَلَأَوْضَعُوا۟ خِلَـٰلَكُمْ يَبْغُونَكُمُ ٱلْفِتْنَةَ وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّـٰعُونَ لَهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
Law kharajū fīkum mā zādūkum illā khabālaw walaʾawḍaʿū khilālakum yabghūnakumul-fitnah, wafīkum sammāʿūna lahum, wallāhu ʿalīmum biẓ-ẓālimīn
Had they mobilized with you, they would have added only to your difficulties, and they would have spread rumors in your midst, trying to sow discord among you. Some of you are avid listeners to them. God is Aware of the wrongdoers.
لَقَدِ ٱبْتَغَوُا۟ ٱلْفِتْنَةَ مِن قَبْلُ وَقَلَّبُوا۟ لَكَ ٱلْأُمُورَ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَظَهَرَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَهُمْ كَـٰرِهُونَ
Laqadibtaghawul-fitnata min qablu waqallabū lakal-umūra ḥattā jāʾal-ḥaqqu waẓahara amrullāhi wahum kārihūn
They tried to cause conflict before, and they hatched plots against you, until the truth prevailed, and the command of God became evident—in spite of their dislike.
وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ ٱئْذَن لِّى وَلَا تَفْتِنِّىٓ ۚ أَلَا فِى ٱلْفِتْنَةِ سَقَطُوا۟ ۗ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌۢ بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
Waminhum may yaqūluʾdhal lī walā taftinnī, alā fil-fitnati saqaṭū, waʾinna jahannama lamuḥīṭatum bil-kāfirīn
Among them is he who says, “Excuse me, and do not trouble me.” In fact, they sunk into trouble. In fact, Hell will engulf the disbelievers.
إِن تُصِبْكَ حَسَنَةٌ تَسُؤْهُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْكَ مُصِيبَةٌ يَقُولُوا۟ قَدْ أَخَذْنَآ أَمْرَنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَيَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُمْ فَرِحُونَ
In tuṣibka ḥasanatun tasuʾhum, waʾin tuṣibka muṣībatuy yaqūlū qad akhadhnā amranā min qablu wayatawallaw wahum fariḥūn
If something good happens to you, it upsets them; and if a calamity befalls you, they say, “We took our precautions in advance,” and they depart, happy.
قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَآ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
Qul lay yuṣībanā illā mā kataballāhu lanā, huwa mawlānā waʿalallāhi falyatawakkalil-muʾminūn
Say, “Nothing will happen to us except what God has ordained for us; He is our Protector.” In God let the faithful put their trust.
قُلْ هَلْ تَرَبَّصُونَ بِنَآ إِلَّآ إِحْدَى ٱلْحُسْنَيَيْنِ ۖ وَنَحْنُ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمْ أَن يُصِيبَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابٍ مِّنْ عِندِهِۦٓ أَوْ بِأَيْدِينَا ۖ فَتَرَبَّصُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّتَرَبِّصُونَ
Qul hal tarabbaṣūna binā illā iḥdal-ḥusnayayn, wanaḥnu natarabbaṣu bikum ay yuṣībakumullāhu biʿadhābim min ʿindihī aw biʾaydīnā, fatarabbaṣū innā maʿakum mutarabbiṣūn
Say, “Are you expecting for us anything other than one of the two excellences? As for us: we are expecting that God will afflict you with a punishment from Himself, or at our hands. So wait, we are waiting with you.”
قُلْ أَنفِقُوا۟ طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمْ ۖ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ
Qul anfiqū ṭawʿan aw karhal lay yutaqabbala minkum, innakum kuntum qawman fāsiqīn
Say, “Whether you spend willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. You are evil people.”
وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ أَن تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَـٰتُهُمْ إِلَّآ أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا يَأْتُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَىٰ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَـٰرِهُونَ
Wamā manaʿahum an tuqbala minhum nafaqātuhum illā annahum kafarū billāhi wabirasūlihī walā yaʾtūnaṣ-ṣalāta illā wahum kusālā walā yunfiqūna illā wahum kārihūn
What prevents the acceptance of their contributions is nothing but the fact that they disbelieved in God and His Messenger, and that they do not approach the prayer except lazily, and that they do not spend except grudgingly.
فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
Falā tuʿjibka amwāluhum walā awlāduhum, innamā yurīdullāhu liyuʿadhdhibahum bihā fil-ḥayātid-dunyā watazhaqa anfusuhum wahum kāfirūn
Let neither their possessions nor their children impress you. God intends to torment them through them in this worldly life, and that their souls depart while they are disbelievers.
وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ
Wayaḥlifūna billāhi innahum laminkum, wamā hum minkum walākinnahum qawmuy yafraqūn
They swear by God that they are of you. But they are not of you. They are divisive people.
لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَـًٔا أَوْ مَغَـٰرَٰتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا لَّوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ
Law yajidūna maljaʾan aw maghārātin aw muddakhalal lawallaw ilayhi wahum yajmaḥūn
Were they to find a shelter, or a cave, or a hideout, they would go to it, rushing.
وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَلْمِزُكَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ فَإِنْ أُعْطُوا۟ مِنْهَا رَضُوا۟ وَإِن لَّمْ يُعْطَوْا۟ مِنْهَآ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْخَطُونَ
Waminhum may yalmizuka fiṣ-ṣadaqāt, faʾin uʿṭū minhā raḍū waʾil lam yuʿṭaw minhā idhā hum yaskhaṭūn
And among them are those who criticize you in regard to charities. If they are given some of it, they become pleased; but if they are not given any, they grow resentful.
وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ رَضُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَقَالُوا۟ حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ سَيُؤْتِينَا ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ رَٰغِبُونَ
Walaw annahum raḍū mā ātāhumullāhu warasūluhū waqālū ḥasbunallāhu sayuʾtīnallāhu min faḍlihī warasūluhū innā ilallāhi rāghibūn
If only they were content with what God and His Messenger have given them, and said, “God is sufficient for us; God will give us of His bounty, and so will His Messenger; to God we eagerly turn.”
۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖ فَرِيضَةً مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
Innamaṣ-ṣadaqātu lil-fuqarāʾi wal-masākīni wal-ʿāmilīna ʿalayhā wal-muʾallafati qulūbuhum wafir-riqābi wal-ghārimīna wafī sabīlillāhi wabnis-sabīl, farīḍatam minallāh, wallāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīm
Charities are for the poor, and the destitute, and those who administer them, and for reconciling hearts, and for freeing slaves, and for those in debt, and in the path of God, and for the traveler in need—an obligation from God. God is All-Knowing, Most Wise.
وَمِنْهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ ۚ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَّكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Waminhumul-ladhīna yuʾdhūnan-nabiyya wayaqūlūna huwa udhun, qul udhunu khayril lakum yuʾminu billāhi wayuʾminu lil-muʾminīna waraḥmatul lilladhīna āmanū minkum, wal-ladhīna yuʾdhūna rasūlallāhi lahum ʿadhābun alīm
And among them are those who insult the Prophet, and say, “He is all ears.” Say, “He listens for your own good. He believes in God, and trusts the believers, and is mercy for those of you who believe.” Those who insult the Messenger of God will have a painful penalty.
يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Yaḥlifūna billāhi lakum liyurḍūkum wallāhu warasūluhū aḥaqqu ay yurḍūhu in kānū muʾminīn
They swear to you by God to please you. But it is more proper for them to please God and His Messenger, if they are believers.
أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُۥ مَن يُحَادِدِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَأَنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدًا فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْخِزْىُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
Alam yaʿlamū annahū may yuḥādidillāha warasūlahū faʾanna lahū nāra jahannama khālidan fīhā, dhālikal-khizyul-ʿaẓīm
Do they not know that whoever opposes God and His Messenger, will have the Fire of Hell, abiding in it forever? That is the supreme disgrace.
يَحْذَرُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٌ تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ قُلِ ٱسْتَهْزِءُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَ
Yaḥdharul-munāfiqūna an tunazzala ʿalayhim sūratun tunabbiʾuhum bimā fī qulūbihim, qulistahziʾū, innallāha mukhrijum mā taḥdharūn
The hypocrites worry lest a chapter may be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, “Go on mocking; God will bring out what you fear.”
وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِٱللَّهِ وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَرَسُولِهِۦ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
Walaʾin saʾaltahum layaqūlunna innamā kunnā nakhūḍu wanalʿab, qul abillāhi waʾāyātihī warasūlihī kuntum tastahziʾūn
If you ask them, they will say, “We were just joking and playing.” Say, “Were you making jokes about God, His revelations, and His Messenger?”
لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَآئِفَةًۢ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ
Lā taʿtadhirū qad kafartum baʿda īmānikum, in naʿfu ʿan ṭāʾifatim minkum nuʿadhdhib ṭāʾifatam biʾannahum kānū mujrimīn
Do not apologize. You have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others, because they are guilty.
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ
Al-munāfiqūna wal-munāfiqātu baʿḍuhum mim baʿḍ, yaʾmurūna bil-munkari wayanhawna ʿanil-maʿrūfi wayaqbiḍūna aydiyahum, nasullāha fanasiyahum, innal-munāfiqīna humul-fāsiqūn
The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They advocate evil, and prohibit righteousness, and withhold their hands. They forgot God, so He forgot them. The hypocrites are the sinners.
وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ وَٱلْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ هِىَ حَسْبُهُمْ ۚ وَلَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ
Waʿadallāhul-munāfiqīna wal-munāfiqāti wal-kuffāra nāra jahannama khālidīna fīhā, hiya ḥasbuhum, walaʿanahumullāh, walahum ʿadhābum muqīm
God has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the disbelievers, the Fire of Hell, abiding therein forever. It is their due. And God has cursed them. They will have a lasting punishment.
كَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَٰلًا وَأَوْلَـٰدًا فَٱسْتَمْتَعُوا۟ بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ فَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَـٰقِكُمْ كَمَا ٱسْتَمْتَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَٱلَّذِى خَاضُوٓا۟ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ
Kal-ladhīna min qablikum kānū ashadda minkum quwwataw waʾakthara amwālaw waʾawlādā, fastamtaʿū bikhalāqihim fastamtaʿtum bikhalāqikum kamastamtaʿal-ladhīna min qablikum bikhalāqihim wakhuḍtum kal-ladhī khāḍū, ulāʾika ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum fid-dunyā wal-ākhirah, waʾulāʾika humul-khāsirūn
Like those before you. They were more powerful than you, and had more wealth and children. They enjoyed their share, and you enjoyed your share, as those before you enjoyed their share. And you indulged, as they indulged. It is they whose works will fail in this world and in the Hereafter. It is they who are the losers.
أَلَمْ يَأْتِهِمْ نَبَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَأَصْحَـٰبِ مَدْيَنَ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتِ ۚ أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
Alam yaʾtihim nabaʾul-ladhīna min qablihim qawmi nūḥiw waʿādiw wathamūda waqawmi ibrāhīma waʾaṣḥābi madyana wal-muʾtafikāt, atathum rusuluhum bil-bayyināt, famā kānallāhu liyaẓlimahum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn
Have they not heard the stories of those before them? The people of Noah, and Aad, and Thamood; and the people of Abraham, and the inhabitants of Midian, and the Overturned Cities? Their messengers came to them with the clear proofs. God never wronged them, but they used to wrong their own selves.
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
Wal-muʾminūna wal-muʾminātu baʿḍuhum awliyāʾu baʿḍ, yaʾmurūna bil-maʿrūfi wayanhawna ʿanil-munkari wayuqīmūnaṣ-ṣalāta wayuʾtūnaz-zakāta wayuṭīʿūnallāha warasūlah, ulāʾika sayarḥamuhumullāh, innallāha ʿazīzun ḥakīm
The believing men and believing women are friends of one another. They advocate virtue, forbid evil, perform the prayers, practice charity, and obey God and His Messenger. These—God will have mercy on them. God is Noble and Wise.
وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِى جَنَّـٰتِ عَدْنٍ ۚ وَرِضْوَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
Waʿadallāhul-muʾminīna wal-muʾmināti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wamasākina ṭayyibatan fī jannāti ʿadn, wariḍwānum minallāhi akbar, dhālika huwal-fawzul-ʿaẓīm
God promises the believers, men and women, gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever, and fine homes in the Gardens of Eden. But approval from God is even greater. That is the supreme achievement.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ جَـٰهِدِ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
Yā ayyuhan-nabiyyu jāhidil-kuffāra wal-munāfiqīna waghluẓ ʿalayhim, wamaʾwāhum jahannamu wabiʾsal-maṣīr
O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Their abode is Hell—what a miserable destination!
يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَلَقَدْ قَالُوا۟ كَلِمَةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بَعْدَ إِسْلَـٰمِهِمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ ۚ وَمَا نَقَمُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ أَنْ أَغْنَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ ۚ فَإِن يَتُوبُوا۟ يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا۟ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ وَمَا لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ
Yaḥlifūna billāhi mā qālū, walaqad qālū kalimatal-kufri wakafarū baʿda islāmihim wahammū bimā lam yanālū, wamā naqamū illā an aghnāhumullāhu warasūluhū min faḍlih, faʾiy yatūbū yaku khayral lahum, waʾiy yatawallaw yuʿadhdhibhumullāhu ʿadhāban alīman fid-dunyā wal-ākhirah, wamā lahum fil-arḍi miw waliyyiw walā naṣīr
They swear by God that they said nothing; but they did utter the word of blasphemy, and they renounced faith after their submission. And they plotted what they could not attain. They were resentful only because God and His Messenger have enriched them out of His grace. If they repent, it would be best for them; but if they turn away, God will afflict them with a painful punishment—in this life and in the Hereafter—and they will have on earth no protector and no savior.
۞ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَـٰهَدَ ٱللَّهَ لَئِنْ ءَاتَىٰنَا مِن فَضْلِهِۦ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
Waminhum man ʿāhadallāha laʾin ātānā min faḍlihī lanaṣṣaddaqanna walanakūnanna minaṣ-ṣāliḥīn
Among them are those who promised God: “If He gives us of His bounty, we will donate and be among the upright.”
فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ
Falammā ātāhum min faḍlihī bakhilū bihī watawallaw wahum muʿriḍūn
But when He has given them of His bounty, they became stingy with it, and turned away in aversion.
فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ بِمَآ أَخْلَفُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ
Faʾaʿqabahum nifāqan fī qulūbihim ilā yawmi yalqawnahū bimā akhlafullāha mā waʿadūhu wabimā kānū yakdhibūn
So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts, until the Day they face Him—because they broke their promise to God, and because they used to lie.
أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَىٰهُمْ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلْغُيُوبِ
Alam yaʿlamū annallāha yaʿlamu sirrahum wanajwāhum waʾannallāha ʿallāmul-ghuyūb
Do they not know that God knows their secrets and their conspiracies? And that God is the Knower of the unseen?
ٱلَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ سَخِرَ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Alladhīna yalmizūnal-muṭṭawwiʿīna minal-muʾminīna fiṣ-ṣadaqāti wal-ladhīna lā yajidūna illā juhdahum fayaskharūna minhum, sakhirallāhu minhum, walahum ʿadhābun alīm
Those who criticize the believers who give charity voluntarily, and ridicule those who find nothing to give except their own efforts—God ridicules them. They will have a painful punishment.
ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ إِن تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ
Istaghfir lahum aw lā tastaghfir lahum, in tastaghfir lahum sabʿīna marratan falay yaghfirallāhu lahum, dhālika biʾannahum kafarū billāhi warasūlih, wallāhu lā yahdil-qawmal-fāsiqīn
Whether you ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them—even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will not forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in God and His Messenger. God does not guide the immoral people.
فَرِحَ ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَـٰفَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَرِهُوٓا۟ أَن يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَنفِرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَرِّ ۗ قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرًّا ۚ لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ يَفْقَهُونَ
Fariḥal-mukhallafūna bimaqʿadihim khilāfa rasūlillāhi wakarihū ay yujāhidū biʾamwālihim waʾanfusihim fī sabīlillāhi waqālū lā tanfirū fil-ḥarr, qul nāru jahannama ashaddu ḥarrā, law kānū yafqahūn
Those who stayed behind rejoiced at their staying behind the Messenger of God. And they hated to strive with their wealth and their lives in God’s way. And they said, “Do not venture out in the heat.” Say, “The Fire of Hell is much hotter, if they only understood.”
فَلْيَضْحَكُوا۟ قَلِيلًا وَلْيَبْكُوا۟ كَثِيرًا جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
Falyaḍḥakū qalīlaw walyabkū kathīrā, jazāʾam bimā kānū yaksibūn
Let them laugh a little, and weep much; in recompense for what they used to earn.
فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ فَٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَ لِلْخُرُوجِ فَقُل لَّن تَخْرُجُوا۟ مَعِىَ أَبَدًا وَلَن تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟ مَعِىَ عَدُوًّا ۖ إِنَّكُمْ رَضِيتُم بِٱلْقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ فَٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَـٰلِفِينَ
Faʾir rajaʿakallāhu ilā ṭāʾifatim minhum fastaʾdhanūka lil-khurūji faqul lan takhrujū maʿiya abadaw walan tuqātilū maʿiya ʿaduwwā, innakum raḍītum bil-quʿūdi awwala marrah, faqʿudū maʿal-khālifīn
If God brings you back to a party of them, and they ask your permission to go out, say, “You will not go out with me, ever, nor will you ever fight an enemy with me. You were content to sit back the first time, so sit back with those who stay behind.”
وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِۦٓ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ
Walā tuṣalli ʿalā aḥadim minhum māta abadaw walā taqum ʿalā qabrih, innahum kafarū billāhi warasūlihī wamātū wahum fāsiqūn
You are never to pray over any one of them who dies, nor are you to stand at his graveside. They rejected God and His Messenger, and died while they were sinners.
وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَأَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
Walā tuʿjibka amwāluhum waʾawlāduhum, innamā yurīdullāhu ay yuʿadhdhibahum bihā fid-dunyā watazhaqa anfusuhum wahum kāfirūn
Do not let their possessions and their children impress you. God desires to torment them through them in this world, and their souls expire while they are disbelievers.
وَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ أَنْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَكَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ
Waʾidhā unzilat sūratun an āminū billāhi wajāhidū maʿa rasūlihistaʾdhanaka uluṭ-ṭawli minhum waqālū dharnā nakum maʿal-qāʿidīn
When a chapter is revealed, stating: “Believe in God and strive with His Messenger,” the prominent among them ask you for exemption. They say, “Allow us to stay with those who stay behind.”
رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ
Raḍū biʾay yakūnū maʿal-khawālifi waṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yafqahūn
They prefer to be with those who stay behind. Their hearts were sealed, so they do not understand.
لَـٰكِنِ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلْخَيْرَٰتُ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
Lākinir-rasūlu wal-ladhīna āmanū maʿahū jāhadū biʾamwālihim waʾanfusihim, waʾulāʾika lahumul-khayrāt, waʾulāʾika humul-mufliḥūn
But the Messenger and those who believe with him struggle with their possessions and their lives. These have deserved the good things. These are the successful.
أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
Aʿaddallāhu lahum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā, dhālikal-fawzul-ʿaẓīm
God has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great victory.
وَجَآءَ ٱلْمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ لِيُؤْذَنَ لَهُمْ وَقَعَدَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ ۚ سَيُصِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Wajāʾal-muʿadhdhirūna minal-aʿrābi liyuʾdhana lahum waqaʿadal-ladhīna kadhabullāha warasūlah, sayuṣībul-ladhīna kafarū minhum ʿadhābun alīm
Some of the Desert-Arabs came to make excuses, asking to be granted exemption, while those who were untrue to God and His Messenger stayed behind. A painful punishment will afflict those among them who disbelieved.
لَّيْسَ عَلَى ٱلضُّعَفَآءِ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلْمَرْضَىٰ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ مَا عَلَى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Laysa ʿalaḍ-ḍuʿafāʾi walā ʿalal-marḍā walā ʿalal-ladhīna lā yajidūna mā yunfiqūna ḥarajun idhā naṣaḥū lillāhi warasūlih, mā ʿalal-muḥsinīna min sabīl, wallāhu ghafūrur raḥīm
There is no blame on the weak, nor on the sick, nor on those who have nothing to give, provided they are true to God and His Messenger. In no way can the righteous be blamed. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا مَآ أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَآ أَجِدُ مَآ أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ تَوَلَّوا۟ وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا يَجِدُوا۟ مَا يُنفِقُونَ
Walā ʿalal-ladhīna idhā mā atawka litaḥmilahum qulta lā ajidu mā aḥmilukum ʿalayh, tawallaw waʾaʿyunuhum tafīḍu minad-damʿi ḥazanan allā yajidū mā yunfiqūn
Nor on those who approach you, wishing to ride with you, and you said, “I have nothing to carry you on.” So they went away, with their eyes overflowing with tears, sorrowing for not finding the means to spend.
۞ إِنَّمَا ٱلسَّبِيلُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَ وَهُمْ أَغْنِيَآءُ ۚ رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
Innamas-sabīlu ʿalal-ladhīna yastaʾdhinūnaka wahum aghniyāʾ, raḍū biʾay yakūnū maʿal-khawālifi waṭabaʿallāhu ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yaʿlamūn
But blame is on those who ask you for exemption, although they are rich. They are content to be with those who stay behind. God has sealed their hearts, so they do not know.
يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ قُل لَّا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكُمْ قَدْ نَبَّأَنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنْ أَخْبَارِكُمْ ۚ وَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
Yaʿtadhirūna ilaykum idhā rajaʿtum ilayhim, qul lā taʿtadhirū lan nuʾmina lakum qad nabbaʾanallāhu min akhbārikum wasayarallāhu ʿamalakum warasūluhū thumma turaddūna ilā ʿālimil-ghaybi wash-shahādati fayunabbiʾukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn
They present excuses to you when you return to them. Say, “Do not offer excuses; we do not trust you; God has informed us of you. And God will watch your actions, and so will the Messenger; then you will be returned to the Knower of the Invisible and the Visible, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”
سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لِتُعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَأَعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ رِجْسٌ ۖ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
Sayaḥlifūna billāhi lakum idhanqalabtum ilayhim lituʿriḍū ʿanhum, faʾaʿriḍū ʿanhum, innahum rijsuw wamaʾwāhum jahannamu jazāʾam bimā kānū yaksibūn
They will swear to you by God, when you return to them, that you may leave them alone. So leave them alone. They are a disgrace, and their destiny is Hell; a reward for what they used to earn.
يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَإِن تَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ
Yaḥlifūna lakum litarḍaw ʿanhum, faʾin tarḍaw ʿanhum faʾinnallāha lā yarḍā ʿanil-qawmil-fāsiqīn
They will swear to you that you may accept them. But even if you accept them, God does not accept the wicked people.
ٱلْأَعْرَابُ أَشَدُّ كُفْرًا وَنِفَاقًا وَأَجْدَرُ أَلَّا يَعْلَمُوا۟ حُدُودَ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
Al-aʿrābu ashaddu kufraw wanifāqaw waʾajdaru allā yaʿlamū ḥudūda mā anzalallāhu ʿalā rasūlih, wallāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīm
The Desert-Arabs are the most steeped in disbelief and hypocrisy, and the most likely to ignore the limits that God revealed to His Messenger. God is Knowing and Wise.
وَمِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ مَغْرَمًا وَيَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُ ٱلدَّوَآئِرَ ۚ عَلَيْهِمْ دَآئِرَةُ ٱلسَّوْءِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Waminal-aʿrābi may yattakhidhu mā yunfiqu maghramaw wayatarabbaṣu bikumud-dawāʾir, ʿalayhim dāʾiratus-sawʾ, wallāhu samīʿun ʿalīm
And among the Desert-Arabs are those who consider their contribution to be a fine. And they wait for a reversal of your fortunes. Upon them will fall the cycle of misfortune. God is Hearing and Knowing.
وَمِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ قُرُبَـٰتٍ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَصَلَوَٰتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ ۚ أَلَآ إِنَّهَا قُرْبَةٌ لَّهُمْ ۚ سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦٓ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Waminal-aʿrābi may yuʾminu billāhi wal-yawmil-ākhiri wayattakhidhu mā yunfiqu qurubātin ʿindallāhi waṣalawātir-rasūl, alā innahā qurbatul lahum, sayudkhiluhumullāhu fī raḥmatih, innallāha ghafūrur raḥīm
Yet among the Desert-Arabs are those who believe in God and the Last Day, and consider their contribution to be a means towards God, and the prayers of the Messenger. Surely it will draw them closer, and God will admit them into His mercy. God is Forgiving and Compassionate.
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلْأَنصَارِ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَـٰنٍ رَّضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى تَحْتَهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
Was-sābiqūnal-awwalūna minal-muhājirīna wal-anṣāri wal-ladhīnattabaʿūhum biʾiḥsānir raḍiyallāhu ʿanhum waraḍū ʿanhu waʾaʿadda lahum jannātin tajrī taḥtahal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadā, dhālikal-fawzul-ʿaẓīm
The Pioneers—the first of the Migrants and the Supporters, and those who followed them in righteousness. God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. That is the sublime triumph.
وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مُنَـٰفِقُونَ ۖ وَمِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ ۖ مَرَدُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنِّفَاقِ لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْ ۖ نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِيمٍ
Wamimman ḥawlakum minal-aʿrābi munāfiqūn, wamin ahlil-madīnati maradū ʿalan-nifāq, lā taʿlamuhum, naḥnu naʿlamuhum, sanuʿadhdhibuhum marratayni thumma yuraddūna ilā ʿadhābin ʿaẓīm
Among the Desert-Arabs around you there are some hypocrites, and among the inhabitants of Medina too. They have become adamant in hypocrisy. You do not know them, but We know them. We will punish them twice; then they will be returned to a severe torment.
وَءَاخَرُونَ ٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا۟ عَمَلًا صَـٰلِحًا وَءَاخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Waʾākharūnaʿtarafū bidhunūbihim khalaṭū ʿamalan ṣāliḥaw waʾākhara sayyiʾā, ʿasallāhu ay yatūba ʿalayhim, innallāha ghafūrur raḥīm
Others have confessed their sins, having mixed good deeds with bad deeds. Perhaps God will redeem them. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَّهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Khudh min amwālihim ṣadaqatan tuṭahhiruhum watuzakkīhim bihā waṣalli ʿalayhim, inna ṣalātaka sakanul lahum, wallāhu samīʿun ʿalīm
Receive contributions from their wealth, to purify them and sanctify them with it; and pray for them. Your prayer is comfort for them. God is Hearing and Knowing.
أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ يَقْبَلُ ٱلتَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَأْخُذُ ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Alam yaʿlamū annallāha huwa yaqbalut-tawbata ʿan ʿibādihī wayaʾkhudhuṣ-ṣadaqāti waʾannallāha huwat-tawwābur-raḥīm
Do they not know that God accepts the repentance of His servants, and that He receives the contributions, and that God is the Acceptor of Repentance, the Merciful?
وَقُلِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ فَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
Waquliʿmalū fasayarallāhu ʿamalakum warasūluhū wal-muʾminūn, wasaturaddūna ilā ʿālimil-ghaybi wash-shahādati fayunabbiʾukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn
Say, “Work. God will see your work, and so will His Messenger, and the believers. Then you will be returned to the Knower of secrets and declarations, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”
وَءَاخَرُونَ مُرْجَوْنَ لِأَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ إِمَّا يُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَإِمَّا يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
Waʾākharūna murjawna liʾamrillāhi immā yuʿadhdhibuhum waʾimmā yatūbu ʿalayhim, wallāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīm
Others are held in suspense, awaiting God’s decree, as to whether He will punish them, or accept their repentance. God is Aware and Wise.
وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مَسْجِدًا ضِرَارًا وَكُفْرًا وَتَفْرِيقًۢا بَيْنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِرْصَادًا لِّمَنْ حَارَبَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنْ أَرَدْنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ
Wal-ladhīnattakhadhū masjidan ḍirāraw wakufraw watafrīqam baynal-muʾminīna waʾirṣādal liman ḥāraballāha warasūlahū min qabl, walayaḥlifunna in aradnā illal-ḥusnā, wallāhu yashhadu innahum lakādhibūn
Then there are those who establish a mosque to cause harm, and disbelief, and disunity among the believers, and as an outpost for those who fight God and His Messenger. They will swear: “Our intentions are nothing but good.” But God bears witness that they are liars.
لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا ۚ لَّمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ أَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِيهِ ۚ فِيهِ رِجَالٌ يُحِبُّونَ أَن يَتَطَهَّرُوا۟ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُطَّهِّرِينَ
Lā taqum fīhi abadā, lamasjidun ussisa ʿalat-taqwā min awwali yawmin aḥaqqu an taqūma fīh, fīhi rijāluy yuḥibbūna ay yataṭahharū, wallāhu yuḥibbul-muṭṭahhirīn
Do not stand in it, ever. A mosque founded upon piety from the first day is worthier of your standing in it. In it are men who love to be purified. God loves those who purify themselves.
أَفَمَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ تَقْوَىٰ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ خَيْرٌ أَم مَّنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَٱنْهَارَ بِهِۦ فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
Afaman assasa bunyānahū ʿalā taqwā minallāhi wariḍwānin khayrun am man assasa bunyānahū ʿalā shafā jurufin hārin fanhāra bihī fī nāri jahannam, wallāhu lā yahdil-qawmaẓ-ẓālimīn
Is he who founds his structure upon piety and acceptance from God better, or he who founds his structure on the brink of a cliff that is about to tumble, so it tumbles with him into the Fire of Hell? God does not guide the unjust people.
لَا يَزَالُ بُنْيَـٰنُهُمُ ٱلَّذِى بَنَوْا۟ رِيبَةً فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَّآ أَن تَقَطَّعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ
Lā yazālu bunyānuhumul-ladhī banaw rībatan fī qulūbihim illā an taqaṭṭaʿa qulūbuhum, wallāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīm
The structure which they built will remain questionable in their hearts, until their hearts are stopped. God is Knowing and Wise.
۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱشْتَرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلْجَنَّةَ ۚ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَ وَيُقْتَلُونَ ۖ وَعْدًا عَلَيْهِ حَقًّا فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَٱلْإِنجِيلِ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ وَمَنْ أَوْفَىٰ بِعَهْدِهِۦ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَٱسْتَبْشِرُوا۟ بِبَيْعِكُمُ ٱلَّذِى بَايَعْتُم بِهِۦ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
Innallāhashtarā minal-muʾminīna anfusahum waʾamwālahum biʾanna lahumul-jannah, yuqātilūna fī sabīlillāhi fayaqtulūna wayuqtalūna waʿdan ʿalayhi ḥaqqan fit-tawrāti wal-injīli wal-qurʾān, waman awfā biʿahdihī minallāhi fastabshirū bibayʿikumul-ladhī bāyaʿtum bih, wadhālika huwal-fawzul-ʿaẓīm
God has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties in exchange for Paradise. They fight in God’s way, and they kill and get killed. It is a promise binding on Him in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Quran. And who is more true to His promise than God? So rejoice in making such an exchange—that is the supreme triumph.
ٱلتَّـٰٓئِبُونَ ٱلْعَـٰبِدُونَ ٱلْحَـٰمِدُونَ ٱلسَّـٰٓئِحُونَ ٱلرَّٰكِعُونَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدُونَ ٱلْـَٔامِرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱلنَّاهُونَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱلْحَـٰفِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
At-tāʾibūnal-ʿābidūnal-ḥāmidūnas-sāʾiḥūnar-rākiʿūnas-sājidūnal-āmirūna bil-maʿrūfi wan-nāhūna ʿanil-munkari wal-ḥāfiẓūna liḥudūdillāh, wabashshiril-muʾminīn
Those who repent, those who worship, those who praise, those who journey, those who kneel, those who bow down, those who advocate righteousness and forbid evil, and those who keep God’s limits—give good news to the believers.
مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن يَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوٓا۟ أُو۟لِى قُرْبَىٰ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
Mā kāna lin-nabiyyi wal-ladhīna āmanū ay yastaghfirū lil-mushrikīna walaw kānū ulī qurbā mim baʿdi mā tabayyana lahum annahum aṣḥābul-jaḥīm
It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are near relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are people of Hellfire.
وَمَا كَانَ ٱسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ إِلَّا عَن مَّوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَآ إِيَّاهُ فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُۥٓ أَنَّهُۥ عَدُوٌّ لِّلَّهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ ۚ إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَأَوَّٰهٌ حَلِيمٌ
Wamā kānastighfāru ibrāhīma liʾabīhi illā ʿam mawʿidatiw waʿadahā iyyāh, falammā tabayyana lahū annahū ʿaduwwul lillāhi tabarraʾa minh, inna ibrāhīma laʾawwāhun ḥalīm
Abraham asked forgiveness for his father only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of God, he disowned him. Abraham was kind and clement.
وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُضِلَّ قَوْمًۢا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَىٰهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُبَيِّنَ لَهُم مَّا يَتَّقُونَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
Wamā kānallāhu liyuḍilla qawmam baʿda idh hadāhum ḥattā yubayyina lahum mā yattaqūn, innallāha bikulli shayʾin ʿalīm
God would never lead a people astray, after He had guided them, until He makes clear to them what they should guard against. God has knowledge of all things.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۚ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ
Innallāha lahū mulkus-samāwāti wal-arḍ, yuḥyī wayumīt, wamā lakum min dūnillāhi miw waliyyiw walā naṣīr
To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He gives life, and He causes death. And besides God, you have neither protector, nor supporter.
لَّقَد تَّابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلْأَنصَارِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ فِى سَاعَةِ ٱلْعُسْرَةِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا كَادَ يَزِيغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِيقٍ مِّنْهُمْ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِهِمْ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Laqat tāballāhu ʿalan-nabiyyi wal-muhājirīna wal-anṣāril-ladhīnattabaʿūhu fī sāʿatil-ʿusrati mim baʿdi mā kāda yazīghu qulūbu farīqim minhum thumma tāba ʿalayhim, innahū bihim raʾūfur raḥīm
God has redeemed the Prophet, and the Emigrants, and the Supporters—those who followed him in the hour of difficulty—after the hearts of some of them almost swerved. Then He pardoned them. He is Kind towards them, Compassionate.
وَعَلَى ٱلثَّلَـٰثَةِ ٱلَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا۟ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَن لَّا مَلْجَأَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّآ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Waʿalath-thalāthatil-ladhīna khullifū, ḥattā idhā ḍāqat ʿalayhimul-arḍu bimā raḥubat waḍāqat ʿalayhim anfusuhum waẓannū al lā maljaʾa minallāhi illā ilayh, thumma tāba ʿalayhim liyatūbū, innallāha huwat-tawwābur-raḥīm
Also towards the three who were left behind. Then, when the earth, as vast as it is, closed in on them, and their very souls closed in on them, and they realized that there was no refuge from God, except in Him, He redeemed them, so that they may repent. God is the Redeemer, the Merciful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
Yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanuttaqullāha wakūnū maʿaṣ-ṣādiqīn
O you who believe! Be conscious of God, and be with the sincere.
مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ أَن يَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ عَن رَّسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَرْغَبُوا۟ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يُصِيبُهُمْ ظَمَأٌ وَلَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا مَخْمَصَةٌ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَطَـُٔونَ مَوْطِئًا يَغِيظُ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَّيْلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عَمَلٌ صَـٰلِحٌ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Mā kāna liʾahlil-madīnati waman ḥawlahum minal-aʿrābi ay yatakhallafū ʿar rasūlillāhi walā yarghabū biʾanfusihim ʿan nafsih, dhālika biʾannahum lā yuṣībuhum ẓamaʾuw walā naṣabuw walā makhmaṣatun fī sabīlillāhi walā yaṭaʾūna mawṭiʾay yaghīẓul-kuffāra walā yanālūna min ʿaduwwin naylan illā kutiba lahum bihī ʿamalun ṣāliḥ, innallāha lā yuḍīʿu ajral-muḥsinīn
It is not for the inhabitants of Medina and the Desert-Arabs around them to stay behind the Messenger of God, nor to prefer themselves to him. That is because they never suffer any thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger in the cause of God, nor do they take one step that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they gain anything from an enemy, but it is recorded to their credit as a righteous deed. God does not waste the reward of the righteous.
وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ نَفَقَةً صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً وَلَا يَقْطَعُونَ وَادِيًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمْ لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
Walā yunfiqūna nafaqatan ṣaghīrataw walā kabīrataw walā yaqṭaʿūna wādiyan illā kutiba lahum liyajziyahumullāhu aḥsana mā kānū yaʿmalūn
Nor do they spend any expenditure, small or large, nor do they cross any valley, but it is recorded to their credit. That God may reward them in accordance with the best of their deeds.
۞ وَمَا كَانَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُوا۟ كَآفَّةً ۚ فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَآئِفَةٌ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا۟ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُوا۟ قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَ
Wamā kānal-muʾminūna liyanfirū kāffah, falawlā nafara min kulli firqatim minhum ṭāʾifatul liyatafaqqahū fid-dīni waliyundhirū qawmahum idhā rajaʿū ilayhim laʿallahum yaḥdharūn
It is not advisable for the believers to march out all together. Of every division that marches out, let a group remain behind, to gain understanding of the religion, and to notify their people when they have returned to them, that they may beware.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يَلُونَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ وَلْيَجِدُوا۟ فِيكُمْ غِلْظَةً ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū qātilul-ladhīna yalūnakum minal-kuffāri walyajidū fīkum ghilẓah, waʿlamū annallāha maʿal-muttaqīn
O you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who attack you, and let them find severity in you, and know that God is with the righteous.
وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ إِيمَـٰنًا ۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ
Waʾidhā mā unzilat sūratun faminhum may yaqūlu ayyukum zādathu hādhihī īmānā, faʾammal-ladhīna āmanū fazādathum īmānaw wahum yastabshirūn
Whenever a chapter is revealed, some of them say, “Which of you has this increased in faith?” As for those who believe: it increases them in faith, and they rejoice.
وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
Waʾammal-ladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun fazādathum rijsan ilā rijsihim wamātū wahum kāfirūn
But as for those in whose hearts is sickness: it adds disgrace to their disgrace, and they die as unbelievers.
أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِى كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
Awalā yarawna annahum yuftanūna fī kulli ʿāmim marratan aw marratayni thumma lā yatūbūna walā hum yadhdhakkarūn
Do they not see that they are tested once or twice every year? Yet they do not repent, and they do not learn.
وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَىٰكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ ۚ صَرَفَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ
Waʾidhā mā unzilat sūratun naẓara baʿḍuhum ilā baʿḍ, hal yarākum min aḥadin thummanṣarafū, ṣarafallāhu qulūbahum biʾannahum qawmul lā yafqahūn
And whenever a chapter is revealed, they look at one another, “Does anyone see you?” Then they slip away. God has diverted their hearts, because they are a people who do not understand.
لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُم بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Laqad jāʾakum rasūlum min anfusikum ʿazīzun ʿalayhi mā ʿanittum ḥarīṣun ʿalaykum bil-muʾminīna raʾūfur raḥīm
There has come to you a messenger from among yourselves, concerned over your suffering, anxious over you. Towards the believers, he is compassionate and merciful.
فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُلْ حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
Faʾin tawallaw faqul ḥasbiyallāhu lā ilāha illā huw, ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wahuwa rabbul-ʿarshil-ʿaẓīm
If they turn away, say, “God is enough for me; there is no god except He; in Him I have put my trust; He is the Lord of the Sublime Throne.”
